Congratulations on your decision to pursue the study of business ethics!  With the rapid changes characteristic of today’s workforce and workplaces, it has become impossible for individuals or companies to rely on a list of rules to resolve their ethical dilemmas.  Analysis and reflection, together with some fundamental principles are called for in making choices where there are no codes or conventions to guide us.  This course is intended to provide you with the skills and background knowledge necessary for successfully navigating the sometimes murky, sometimes turbulent waters that is today’s work environment.

In this course you will be provided with:

  • An evaluation of your own inclinations with respect to ethical reasoning, through our Ethical Orientation Diagnostic Survey
  • An introduction to the place of ethics with respect to moral systems, laws, professional codes, and other directives
  • An introduction to several approaches to ethical problems, including an indication of where your own ethical values fit.  Steeped in the history of thought, these ways of thinking are offered in a practical, easy-to-use manner
  • An understanding of the ways in which these various ethical approaches are woven together to solve real day-to-day ethical dilemmas
  • A case study for you to practice on, together with a step-by-step procedure for thinking your way through difficult and complex ethical situations
  • A competency test, to insure that you have assimilated all the information and skills that this course provides

Estimated time for completing the course is approximately 6-8 hours.  We encourage you to carefully study the diagrams and procedural outlines offered, and to reflect seriously on your values as you take the EODS.  When you are instructed to write, you should have available sufficient time to carefully consider the details of the situation described and to formulate a reasoned justification for your ethical stance.  You will be able to log out of the course and come back later, so do not rush these procedures.  During the exam you will be able to refer back to the course pages, but otherwise each section should be entered sequentially.  Allot yourself at least 45 minutes for the exam.
